Visiting Ithala Game Reserve earlier in 2022, it was a shock to see the state of the main camp and roads of the park.
Covid is no excuse for doing zero maintenance and of the 67 units in the camp, I would estimate that 60 percent of them are uninhabitable due to failing thatch. There is an abundance of thatching grass in the reserve which could be used and give the community an opportunity to earn an income. There were only five people in total in the camp with an occupancy of 160 and it’s hard to see this reserve recovering. Ezemvelo has fallen into decline and would be better off managed by SA National Parks. That said the staff we encountered were polite and efficient. The management at higher levels are a disgrace to all the lower ranks.
