Essenwood Residential Home, for elderly ladies was originally established by the Durban Benevolent Society that itself was established in 1855, in Durban’s Victoria Street. The home then moved onto Essenwood Road on the Berea.

The land was donated by Walter Greenacre and a bequest by his father Benjamin Greenacre paved the way for the new building which was completed in 1921.

Over the years many Durban citizens have participated in the operations and Board of the home. Amongst the families to be on the board were, the late Hugh Johnston and Barbara Johnston, who served for many years. In 2024 a new wing, the Johnston Wing was named in their honour, by the current board.

This post shows the opening of the wing by Bridget Bland (nee Johnston) the daughter of Hugh and Barbara, with a blessing by the Reverend Jen Hands.
