Mary Agnes Stainbank (1899-1996), was undoubtedly one of South Africa’s most talented women sculptors and her work can be seen throughout South Africa. Mary, who trained at the Royal College of Arts, specialised in stone sculptures and ceramics.
Whilst travelling recently I came across her work in Magudu (aka Magut), in Northern KZN. It was on the front façade of the Magistrates Court. Magudu is thought to have been the home of the Rain Queen, Magudu and is perched on top a hill close to Pongola.
I have taken many images of Mary’s proposal sketches, and came across these sketches. They were annotated ‘Magudu Magistrates Court’. I could not find her final image (I am still sorting through about 4000 of her, and Wilgeford Vann-Hall’s work!). The images here were some of her ideas in arriving at the final product.
