The closed site in March 2022 – closed 2015
It’s sad to see the Morewood Memorial at Compensation is closed. The memorial was to commemorate Sir Edmund Morewood who grew the first commercial cane in 1851 and in turn produced sugar. The factory was very simple and output by the factory limited.
The Garden was a National Monument which was built in 1951 on the mill site to commemorate the Centenary . The replica of the mill has been removed and is at the SASSA offices in Mount Edgecombe due to vandalism and misuse of the site.
This blog shows the closed gates and images I took prior to closure. Lack of respect and neglect of heritage sites is a prevalent problem in SA. Also shown are images I took in 2012
